Open Office is a great alternative to M$ Office and Macs are far superior to Windows computers. Oh. I guess the standand answer doesn't help.

Personally I have used Microsoft Office on PCs for fifteen years and never ever had a problem. Even opened MS Word documents created on Macs.
Perhaps if you posted the actual message you'd get more help.

beso why are telling me about how wonderful microsoft word is?
i dont have it on my laptop, i only have open office,.
rojash.. what is it you reckon i should post? i thought the post was quite clear.
i need to find out why my Emac refuses to open an open office document from my windows laptop which is also open office.
originally my Emac didnt have open office, but i thought if i stood any chance of opening an o.office document, i would need to download o.office first on my Emac. this of course didnt work
if someone has a simple solution i 'd be very grateful

There are a number of potential reasons why you may not be able to open it, not all directly connected with the application itself. As far as I am aware there is no OS message and no OO message that says "I refuse to allow you to open the doscument".
Getting the actual message format and text might well help to indicate the source of the problem.

look rojash, when i try to open an open office document using my Emac, a window comes up and in so many words it more or less says it doesnt recognise the origin of the document. its probably best to try it again, and record the exact wording for you

The reason that you are being asked for the *exact* wording of the error message is because that can then be Googled. This will (almost) certainly reveal exactly what the problem is and what can be done to fix it.

You could even have a bash at Googling it yourself - it's not hard...

ok heres the exact wording i get in a pop up window, when trying to open an open office document... There is no default application specified to open the odt document.
as i am computer illiterate, please advise me what i need to do next?

thanx

right click the document icon, select "open with", then choose the programme you want to use to open the document. (I don't use OO so I'm not sure of the name of the WP application)
Unless I'm misunderstanding the OP, he's trying to open this OpenOffice document on his Mac, so that won't help.

This will: http://osxdaily.com/2...ciations-in-mac-os-x/
It might Mark. OO also runs on a mac. The resource fork on the PC version might be corrupt and not pointing it to the correct appl. on the mac. Choosing the right appl. on the mac will give it a clue, it might also be worth pointing it towards TextEdit on the mac which opens most formats
