Brian Ferry cover of John Lennons 'Jealous guy'
David Bowie's version of George Harrison's Try Some Buy Some. It's a perfect cover version - it retains the spirit of the original, but is also very much Bowie.

That's the first that sprang to mind, there may be others. A group of session musicians in the 90s did a covers album called The Replicants. It's got superb versions of Just What I Needed (The Cars), Are Friends Electric (Tubeway Army), Destination Unknown (Smashing Pumpkins) and Dirty Work (Steely Dan). Kind of electro-grunge versions.
Have to agree with Andyhughes - it's got to be Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah. It gives me goosepimples.
The Stranglers - Walk On By.

Think, Burt Bacharach meets The Doors!
