Sounds like "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe...

Much as I don't want to disagree and I'm no expert but the storyline of Uncle Tom's cabin doesn't seem to be this. Do you remember where it's set? Use of the word concubine suggest the 'East' rather than the West.

Something more contemporary could be The book of night women by Marlon James Lilith is the servant girl . She is "spirited" in that the women,who are slaves on the plantation think she has special powers.
