whats your fav piece of classical music??

mine is without doubt Jupiter from The Planets by Gustav Holst, especially the bit used for the hymn I Vow to Thee My Country.  I get goosebumps when i hear it - it was played at my wedding in August.

Pachelbel's Canon in D Major, probably the only piece of classical music I've ever spent time listening to. It reminds me of a friend who died.

Beethovens 9th symphony..the final movement..

I also love gershwins american in paris..

And many many others.!

Carmina Burana by Carl Orff - the whole thing.

Maybe the fact that the first time I listened to it was on a wild and windy night while driving across Dartmoor - it made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck!

Beethoven's Symphony No.6, in F major Op.68 "Pastoral"

I fell in love with this when I was about 12 years old and forty years on I've never heard anything to rival it.

It is IMHO the finest example of programme music ever composed.
Wow, I was just going to post a vote for Beethoven's 6th - utterly wonderful, the last movement in particular brings a tear to the throat and a lump to the eye.

Perhaps my favourite individual piece (as opposed to a whole work) is The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves from Verdi's opera Nabucco. The music is so good at setting the mood that you can almost understand the words even if you don't speak Italian. I'm one of those oddballs who can get emotional over music, and I daren't listen to it in front of anyone.
hardly in competition with the above, but I love Flight of The Bumble Bee (I think it's by Rimsky Karsakov) It's so simple yet very powerful and I have loved this piece since I first heard it when I was small, and trust me it is along time since I was small.

Can't possibly choose just one cazz, but some of my favourites are:

Mozart Clarinet Concerto

Bach Mass in B minor

Bach St Matthew Passion

Prokofiev Classical Symphony

Faure Requiem, also Cantique de Jean Racine

Grieg Piano Concerto (especially 2nd movement)

Bruch, Mendelssohn and Brahms Violin Concertos

Schubert Ballet music 'Rosamunde'

Tchaikovsky Swan Lake

Sorry, I'd better stop there but it's SO difficult!

Can't decide on one but like these aswell as some mentioned in previous answers:

Rodrigo : Concerto de Aranjuez

Chopin: Nocturne opus 9 No 2

and from opera love the short aria:

Cilea: Amor ti Vieta    sung by Jussi Bjorling.

Dvorak's Serenade for Strings in E major, especially the second movement.

(no, it's not the Hovis one !!!!)

Barbers - Adagio for Strings  - such a moving piece of music that i have never grown tired of.

Amor ti vieta  was composed by : Giordano
