There is something making piles of the cotswold stones which I have put in a small section of my garden. Originally it was always in exactly the same place (abour 20 stones, approx 1/2 inch large) even when removed to clean the path they came back within 2/3 days exact same spot, the activity is always at night and all seasons. Now the stones are not only in that place but heaps in several other places too. What am I sharing my garden with, any ideas?

Could be a Jackdaw or Magpie. Both collect bright objects

Thanks for your answer but the pebbles haven't gone anywhere and they have taken on a green tone (weathered) so are no longer bright, I also think we have to rule out birds as all the activity is at night.
It`s probably an old grave, and the spirit doesn`t like being disturbed.
Are you near a pathway that people walk,on their way home from the pub?
If you ever see a few small bags of sand and cement and a miniature cement mixer you'll know that leprechauns are planning to build a wee house in your garden.
Butter,
I'd be so curious I'd have to set up cctv to tape through the night!
Try removing the top layer of stones and you may find some cat poo underneath.
It's probably a cat that isn't used to using ordinary soil for a toilet.
Do you have an open garden? I'm wonder whether it could possibly be foxes or badgers. Both of them have a habit of foraging for beetles and insects (particularly badgers whose main diet is worms). If you have any flower beds nearby look to see if there are any fresh patches of earth which look as if they've been disturbed. Although if it is badgers, why they should gather everything in piles is a mystery to me. If you have any small burrow holes nearby, the other possibility could be rats who are quite capable of digging and tunnelling.

Thanks so much for all your interest but sadly it still remains one of lifes mysteries. I havent a large open garden its smallish and well fenced. There are no burrows nearby. I bravely, this morning disturbed one of the piles but could see nothing underneath only mud and the occasional worm. The main mystery is the pile they keep lifting up and placing on the stone patio -always in the same place.
I think someone in your household is pulling your leg!!!
