The key fob recently stopped working remotely. I thought it was the battery and replaced it. The red light on the fob flashes when I press the options (open/lock doors, open boot) but nothing remotely happens.

I was had locked the car with the remote and when I used the key part of the fob to manually open the door it was fine but as soon as I tried to start the car, the alarm actuated. I had to phone my husband for him to bring me the spare fob in order for me to drive the car.

Does this mean a completely new key fob? Being a female I don't want to go to the VW dealer and appear to have no knowledge! ;-)
