Plaster flakes whilst decorating

I have had dado rails removed and the damaged area plastered. The plaster has been sanded to run smoothly with the original wall. When I have come to paint the wall the thin areas of plaster have flaked off leaving a hard edge on the remaining plaster. Why has this happened and is there anything I can do or use to prevent it happening again in other rooms?

Hi Trudy, tell me about it. I have had the same problem.

It is nye impossible to plaster an area with out the edge blending in so as not to leave an edge, however if you score the area around the good plaster you can overcome the flaking.

Best of luck.
After removing the dado rail, paint the old plaster generously with PVA diluted 5 parts water to 1 part PVA and let it soak in and dry. This will provide a firmer base for the new plaster. Use something like Polyfilla since it will adhere better than ordinary plaster, even when in a very thin layer. Smooth it off as neat as possible as you apply it to reduce the need for sanding.
Best way is to clean the immediate area thoroughly with sugar soap, then have the plasterer chamfer the edges of old openings. Wet the area before plastering (multifinish should be ok) trowel over firmly with a large wet brush along the joints. Any other way, it is likely to show and be proud of old surface.
