Shopping around for renewal buildings and contents insurance, I was quoted a high premium because I live in an old house(late Victorian). No other company has done this before - in fact, many agree that my house will probably still be standing long after some of these flimsy modern-builds have fallen down! It's just an ordinary house (i.e. not listed or anything), well-built and solid. Needless to say, I declined this quote - and it was a company that shouts a lot on tv adverts. Anyone else experienced this "ageism"?

Have not experienced this but i suggest you should try comparison websites and compare home insurance companies, try http://theycompare.co.uk , http://confused.com , http://moneysupermarket.com , http://gocompare.com
Lucca, I've insured my 1860s terraced house variously over the years with Halifax, Nationwide, Marks & Spencer, Tesco - there has been no problem with the age of the house - give them a try via their websites!

Thanks, both of you - have done all the sites (every year) and it's the first time I've been quoted a higher premium because of age - happy to stay with M & S - best quote.
Insurance companies talk a lot about fraudulent claims by there customers, and yet they are the first to come up with different ideas like yours, to try and rip us off, and then when you do try and make a claim, again they will try and find a way out.
Insurers are entitled to choose what market they want to deal in just as any other company is. If they have had poor claims experience with the older properties they have insured in the past then it is perfectly reasonable for them to look elsewhere for business - why call it a rip off WW ? - there are loads of companies out there Lucca have a look around there are bound to be a few with an appetite for older houses. Good Luck
