why are manhole covers alway round? (Yes I know that some are not but for the purpose of this question they are).

Drilling a round hole is easier than a square, hence round manhole covers
Because any other shape could be rotated and therefore fall in unlike a round shape

Cant you think of a more intelligent Q RJUKL, this is so old.
If it is square it's not a manhole cover it is a grid.
mamaylynne is correct. Any other shape could fall in.

Yes it is round only so that it can never drop down. I found this out when I raised my rectangular manhole cover and it almost fell down the manhole when it was at an angle.
