can anyone tell me why my metamec wall clock has lost its nice sound, suddenly the dong became a flat sounding donk, like someone hitting a tin with a wooden spoon, any suggestions would be welcome.

Maybe the Bell has started to come loose from its housing and needs re-tightening.
Have a look at the unit, maybe the screw or bolt is loose.
Put the Ding back into your Dong. :-)

thanks redman41, I will try to have a look inside now I know what to look for.
If the mechanism is anything like my mantle-clock ie. pull-rods/hammers -there is a likelihood that one of the rods is dropping the hammer down onto the bell and not bouncing off again properly.
If it is a spirally wound chime rod, with a hammer, there needs to be a small distance maintained between the hammer and rod (like 1-2mm ish)
Check to see if hammer has twisted around and is touching chime.
