Ultraman - “... god is a great being and that he tries to do his best for us all”
We are talking about the same God aren't we? The God who literally created the universe? The God who randomly kills people for no reason whatsoever?
God 'tries' to do the best for us does He? Oh wow. It's amazing how an entity such as God seems powerless to prevent the deaths of thousands of people in Haiti and in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.
Maybe He was just 'testing' His people?

Your faith in God may have helped you through hard times. Faith in yourself would work just the same.
Your God started out as a god of war. Just as you attribute God to getting through hard times, faith in Him made warriors fight with confidence. As both sides in combat worshipped some God or other it didn't matter who won, the victors would attribute their success to their God.
We ended up with the Hebrew God because they were ruthless fighters who killed everyone in the land they invaded after leaving Egypt.
