Can anyone explain why sky news is saying " the alleged bomb attck on christmas day "

The minister said more measures had been taken to protect aviation since the alleged failed bomb attack on a plane over Detroit at Christmas.

why is it " ALLEGED " , the bloke had a bomb in his underpants that failed to go off, he cant despute the fact, so why alleged, is'nt this used to stop litigation in case the facts are wrong ?

hello Dave, I think they have to use this term until such time as he is found to be guilty

People are innocent until proven guilty. So, for the time being, he's an 'alleged' bomber.

he cant deny have a bomb in his pants, they have the proof, the bomb, the burnt, pants, his injurys, and all the witnesses.

Oh, Hi Joy, hope you and your other half are both well.

agree but under our judicional system, ha has to be proven guilty first
I wouldn't like to bet against a conviction with all that evidence. But still, until he's convicted he's an alleged bomber.

yes sandy, but he is in America, not the uk.

If Sky or any other news outlet says 'the bomber' , they're in danger of prejudicing the trial,in that they're prejudging the issue which a jury is to decide.Potential jurors read the news.So the media always say 'alleged' even to the extent of saying 'alleged attack'.
Americans have been known to sue for libel in Britain, as the laws in their favour are much tougher here; just as long as they can show someone, somewhere read or heard it. Jack Straw is belatedly thinking of doing something about this 'libel tourism'. Meanwhile, defame Americans at your peril.
May be flippant, but if it did say 'alleged Christmas Day bomber' it would be entirely correct, as nobody knows the exact date of Christ's birth, so the 'alleged Christmas Day' bit is right.
wishy, at last the bloke's got a defence ! Wonder what the indictment will say. If it says Christmas Day, he might have got a run.Bit technical, but at present it's all he's got !
