Shade ?
Spare?
Just to confuse matters, I thought shave (a thin slice) - yet another irritating clue from the DR
On second thoughts, I'm going with mazie's suggestion - shade (well done mazie!) I've found shade defined in the Oxford Dictionary as 'a slight amount' - that'll do for me (can't wait to lob this crossword in the postbox!)
You've got us all reaching for the dictionaries now, still can't make up my mind, as you say JMR 27 a horrible clue!!
Hi atsgran I'm sorry! Mine's now in the post (hooray)
ah but thats what makes our Tuesday's, well until one starts to bang their head
against a brick wall because there is no rhyme or reason to the answers, but alas
I am not from Scotland ~ my Aunts, Uncles and cousins ALL are. I love them all.

Thanks to you all BUT I've found the word 'spale', which means a small chip or slither of timber or stone!
Lucky JMR27, I expect I shall still be struggling with this tomorrow morning.

Hope you win JMR you deserve to.
Could't find that word, but found SPALL - a chip or fragment from a piece of stone or ore??
Hi nactel I've looked up spale in Chambers: (Scots) a splinter; a chip. In my humble opinion I think that definition is too specific and I will stick with shade (anyway I may be arrested if I try to retrieve it from the postbox). If we each put in a different answer at least one of us might win. Good luck.
Good Luck everybody whatever answer you've put in :-))
if it's any help i have shade for 50d and vet for 61a
