I am renting a 4 bedroom house with 3 friends who are written into the contract. What is the law regarding a 5th person sharing my room?

The contract that you each have with the landlord probably will state that you cannot do this - legally anyway. Read it and see.
The tenancy agreement probably states no sub-letting. When the landlord let the place to you, he checked you all out. He might well have concerns about a new - unknown - bod living there.

If he'll agree, you can re-assign the original tenancy from the 3 of you to the 4 of you. That way, LL can take all the usual precautions.
