Classical rebel, putting hip-hop in musical, converted America S-A-T-C-S

the rebel is surely SPARTICUS
but the word play is not clear. Is hip-hop RAP? But why backwards???

hip-hop = rap, musical = cats => cat-rap-s
converted in this case means backwards => spartac
+ US

Thanks Jumbuck - spartAcus. Oops. Don't like the 'converted' though.
I'd prefer to take 'converted' as an anagram indicator.
In this case the anagram just happens to be reversed.

but then there would be no purpose for the 'in'.
:-(
Defn 9 here http://dictionary.ref....com/browse/converted gives invert as a definition/synonym of convert and invert can mean "to reverse the order of" http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/invert

Must admit it's not usual in cryptic clues.

Agreed - that does justify the use Jumbuck. Like gen2 I simply assumed it meant 'jumble'. Will cross-ref in Chambers when I have a copy available, though not sure what dictionary the Indy prefers.
