Last night, my coollant warning light came on. Checked all the levels - all OK. Belt looks OK. But fan does appear to be making a funny noise.

However there is another thing which is completely empty but I don't know what it is. It is located just behind the fan belt and to the far right of the coollant well and is a small black container with a black screw lid. Clearly its not something that I am meant to fiddle with, but I would like to know what it is. It's not the coollant, oil, brake fluid or washer thing. Ive taken the lid off and its not pressurised. Any ideas please?

That should be "light" not "like". And the instruction book doesn't tell me.
Do what you normally do... take it down the garage, flutter your eyelashes and push your chest out and smile sweetly... that'll sort it.

THAT particular garage is 65 miles away and I am not sure it is OK to drive it.

I've no idea lol !! If it's near to the petrol hole I won't have ever seen that !!!! Are you typing from Ting Tongs Bordello or are you still in UK?
I'm still fekkin here due to work, although you wouldn't think so, the amount of time I waste on here... maybe off in the New Year...
Oh nice one !! Be good if you get off then :o) Good to see you're still working very hard as usual lazy elbow !

Should try and answer the old trouts question I suppose - BM - my coolant light comes on every day on my car when the temperature drops - it's been to the garage and they say it is just hypersensitive, doesn't need a top up with coolant or anything - I usually switch the engine on and off a few times and it goes off lol !!!
Elbow??? What The Funicular!??
You're obviously having a busy day at work too ;-p

On a serious note I suspect your power steering reservoir is empty and needs filling. More ominously...why?
Merc SLK 230 two seater with electric steel roof? Sounds like power steering reservoir.

The spares for these cars are loadsa money. Basically add a zero onto your garage bill.
