Now i know I could Google the answer, but I guess I'm after some reassurances..

My mum phoned me last night to tell me my aunt had died out in Oz (where she lives) of cervical cancer. I also know that a few years ago my mum had laser treatment to remove "abnormal cells".

Ok here's the part where i know im going to get told off- I havent had a smear test for errr about 10 years now. I hated the ones I'd had in the past and found it painful, embarrassing etc, so i never bothered making an apointment for subsequent ones when letters came to the door reminding me that one was due.

Have to admit, my mum scared me a bit of the phone last night and I will be making an appointment to have one done after Christmas, but i'm curious to know (and a bit scared) if it is hereditary?

One of the main reasons for cervical cancer is Genital warts and I would like to say that I do not have any or ever have!!

Do it B00. I'm off for a scan next week (day before xmas eve) as I have been having pains etc.. and my Grandma died of ovarian cancer. My Auntie (her daughter) also has breast cancer for the second time. I am scared to high heaven and when I stop and think about it I burst into tears, christmas to me is ruined. Please just ring the Doc's and make an appt.

Aww wingy, im sure you'll get an all clear. Let us know how you get on? PM me on FaceBook if you like.

And yes I will

xxxx

Thanks please sir.
It is not hereditary, most cervical cancer is caused by a virus similar to the Herpes virus. ALL Girlies need to have a smear test done, if you haven't had one, then get it done asap. Like all cancers, you need to catch them early for effective treatment. go for it, you'll feel much better Boo.
Thanx B00, I will once I know what's what :o)

Hi Boo.
I don't know if you'll see this, I haven't been online for a few days. I used to really hate smear tests until I changed my gynaecologist and seeing how stressed I was she used a smaller 'thing' (don't know what you call them) to open the vagina and now I feel a lot more relaxed. I also had the test done to see if I was carrying the virus, which came back clear, so don't need to have them as often.
