At the rist of sounding like a hand-wringing leftie, not all long-term unemployed are lazy, workshy scum. Many of them have struggled with education and failed to get any qualifications, or have such poor social skills people don't give them work. Some people just don't function very well. Disability benefit doesn't cover that.

It's up to us to make sure they don't fall through the cracks and end up homeless or destitute. That's what society is for.
And if you want own brand biscuits and white cider for a week, then I suggest that you to scrounge.

Is it that you would prefer that people starved?

Would you be happy if we provided the food but didn't give people money(Something I support) - there would after all still be people on benefits.

Personally I want a nicer house, nicer food and decent wine - which is why I work.
I agree with that Quinlad so I might revise my opinion.

I'm more angry at the fact that whilst they are claiming all this benefit they are also getting regular £200 payments from the girl's parents, last I heard not declaring extra income was benefit fraud!
No I don't have a posh TV by the way OEV,we have a very old fashioned 21" tele.My PC was bought wih the backpay from my DLA several years ago and my son's games console was paid for out of his DLA backpay. We recently bought a 'new' car for £600 that we had to borrow the money for from the oh's parents and then pay back in installments. We never go out and the only luxury we have is our internet connection.
/// they are also getting regular £200 payments from the girl's parents, last I heard not declaring extra income was benefit fraud! ////

How do you know that they are not declaring it?

///We never go out and the only luxury we have is our internet connection. ////

I am sorry about your circumstances, but this is not the fault of the couple who are claiming what they are entitled to and saving part of that money.
OEV- you're missing the point entirely...

Whether it's by deisgn of the columnist ive no idea, but on reading that I genuinely get the impression that this couple are gloating that they're on benefits, and have mod cons, all paid for by someone else thank you very much.

I still fail to see how you can be on the dole due to a groin injury and yet still keep on doling (no pun intended) kids out.
Actually, i think it is you who is missing the point:

/// I genuinely get the impression that this couple are gloating that they're on benefits///
Do you think that they wrote the article or the journalist did? A (gutter) journalists job is to write articles that people will read. No one wants to read about the fact that if you scrimp and save, you can enjoy Christmas.

/// and have mod cons /// why do you think that they have all mod cons. Because you know, or becuase that is your perception becuase of the way the article is written. Do you think they have a 50" plasma tv or a 21" CRT tv? Do you think they have a PS3? How do you know, or are your perceptions working overtime?

/// all paid for by someone else thank you very much./// when did he give up his job due to his disability and how much was he earning before? How much did he save and how long before he started to claim?

/// I still fail to see how you can be on the dole due to a groin injury and yet still keep on doling (no pun intended) kids out. /// When did he go off on the sick? His youngest child is 7 months old, so it may be that he hasn't had sex in 16 months. The article doesn't mention when his groin problem started.

This is exactly what is wrong with this type of gutter journalism. It gives a load of innuendos and lets the reader make it out to be worse than it is.

I particularly like the line: ///The rise in handouts allows them to drive an expensive Italian sports car///

What is expensive? How old is the car?

I have a friend who drives an Alfa and I text him this morning after seeing this article with that same comment. He earns about £15,000 a year.
I'm actually astonished by your reasoning and defence of this story OEV. Yes the paper may be biased in the way it told the story, making us feel indignation at this couple, and quite possibly i'm a sucker for falling for it too. But the list of the freebies they recieved and continue to recieve have to be facts, or else they'd be sued.

I wouldn't be surpised if you'd prefer it we just handed our entire wage packets to the family literally, cut out the middle men- just hand it over on the doorstep to them.
Her friend really missed out on such a great catch !
erm what freebies? Are you talking about the benefits system? If so, then as I have said before, you can't blame this couple for the system. They (presumably) are claiming what they are entitled to.

They may well not smoke or drink like a lot of people and decide to put that money aside for Christmas every year. Why do you have a problem with that?
