A car doesn't have to be taxed to sell so no problem with you keeping the disc.

Previously, the dealer could have cashed it in and got the money back but as of Jan 2009, The rules were changed meaning only the registered keeper (you) could do this. Another way that the government has shafted the motor industry really by taking away a revenue stream! Make sure your car has not been valued as a part exchange with it included though as the dealer may want it to give to the new buyer of the car as part of the deal. If not, you can keep the disc and send back to DVLA for a refund.
