I think you'll find the GeoCities server is Unix. So the file system shouldn't be 'alien'. All basic web sites are text pages in HTML format stored in one or more nested directories.
Geocities uses a on-site file manager where members can upload their pages in a most convenient way. I'm not familiar with unix, but they probably require files to be uploaded by FTP (File Transfer Protocol), there are many free FTP programs on the Net.
If you friend has not got a copy of his/her site, it would need to be downloaded (copy) from geocities page by page, and uploaded to the other host via FTP.
ooops, I'm sure there was no answer there when I submitted my answer. In that case, forget was I said Moonhead, and go with Pinotage's answer.
Are you trying to host your own website on a Unix box? Or are you tranfering your site to a host that is known to be a Unix box? At the end of the day your website is a collection of files and folders written in HTML which can be transferred between Windows/Linux/Unix OSes using FTP.
