Why are Fig Rolls(I am addicted to them) called Fig Newtons in the USA? and where did the "Newton" come from?

Newtons is the name of the company that makes them.  And when I googled it I found you can get apple newtons, strawberry newtons, a whole range of flavours.  Mmmmmmm.   I am sad.

I love fig rolls but i hate fig newtons!! i had them in New York and i was tickled by the name for some reason but when i tried them..yak! No way are they as good as fig rolls!
