Super soft dressing gown disaster!

Please help - I have ruined my nieces new super soft dressing gown and don't know how to restore it.
I followed the machine washing instructions to the letter and did not tumble dry but what emerged is a rough, terry towelling robe NOT the lovely, soft and squishy dressing gown which I had put in!
Does anyone know how I can revive it? Or where on earth I went wrong and how (if I have to buy her another one) I don't make the same mistake again.

if it's uined anyway, i woud try tumble-drying it
how old is it - was that the first wash? take it back to the shop if it was, the instructions must be wrong
It would be worth trying almost any idea put to you. I have sometimes had success in restoring softness to a fabric by rinsing it in hair conditioner and then tumble drying on a very low temperature setting. (choose the silk or delicates setting), and don't give it too long at a time. You can always put it back for a bit longer if needed.

Try `Fairy Soap Flakes` in the wash .
I've got one and I wash it and tumble dry it. Still lovely and soft.

You can get them from Asda for £10.
