I think the blame partly lies with those parents who think it's okay to knock out 8 kids whilst on benefits. they in turn have 8 kids at a very young age and so on, and so on. before we know it, we'll be overrun with them. no jobs and no respect.. and up goes the crime rate.
The upward trend in the prison population started after WWII

See graph on page 15 here

http://www.parliament...rch/rp99/rp99-111.pdf

i cannot see on this graph where the immigrants' arrival has made any difference to the trend that preceded them.
I'm not the type to place huge stock in statistics, but surely it would be easy enough to work out the number of immigrants in prison between now and 1945.
I think lack of discipline at home/school, people needing to drink themselves stupid and soft sentencing for criminals (no deterrent) are to blame.
well my cousin was murdered on a footpath by a river in Kent in the 1950's by a stranger, but I know for a fact that here in Ibiza, it's definitely gotten worse with the influx of sub-saharans and people whose woman wear burkas! (I am trying to be very PC here, hope it's alright)
gromit.

////The upward trend in the prison population started after WWII ////

Indeed it did but the explosive rise is clearly seen starting in 1995.

What we need now is a graph, showing the influx of immigrants and comparing it to the graph mentioned above and then we will be in a position to assess the effect of immigration on prison population.
netibiza.........exactly the same in Menorca.........a worrying development.
Sqad

After 1997, Labour started to get tough and send more people to prison. Before that, the Tories were soft. Under Labour we have 30,000 more people in Prison. It has been suggested that as politicians talk tough on crime, and the terror threat is cranked up, that sentences get less lenient and longer.

However, there is a lot of evidence to suggest that prison does not stop re-offending.
gromit....LOL....how did I know that Tories and Labour would come together in at least one of your sentences....LOL

////However, there is a lot of evidence to suggest that prison does not stop re-offending.////

I couldn't care a "toss" about re-offending, I just want the villains out of society for a spell....makes me feel safer.
Someone quite close to my heart came in to this country in the 50's and I feel very, very safe with him! ;o)
When I was a teenager I could confidently walk the 5 miles home from London's West End in the early hours, but I wouldn't like to try it now.

Prison might not stop people re-offending, but by removing the culprits from society, it makes the streets safer for the law-abiding.
I should have added I don't think the decline in society is entirely due to immigration. I just think we're more violent, more selfish, and less caring in general now.
Absolutely agree with you Naomi.
Well as sqad and I kn ow for a fact, the immigrants who are living in the Balearic Islands, come from a different background to us, and think nothing of breaking into places to get what they want and attacking anyone to get it. In several instances locally older people have been held in their homes whilst these foreigners ransack the place and they have injured the house owners!

Obviously not all foreigners are the same, after all Sqad and I are foreigners and up to now we have not had to resort to robbery or violence, but believe me, if I catch one in my house I'll wallop the bugger!!!
Good for you, neti, and so would I - whatever the nationality.
