Sikh= Gurudwara
Hindu= Temple
Buddhist= Vihara

i knew hindus worshipped at a temple but i thought the name would be something else
mandir for communal although many will have a shrine at home as well
Redman isright. The only thing I would add and may be that was the reason for you to think it differently. For Sikh main name given is Gurdara but then they call them according to which Guru they name it after. Eg Guru Sing Sabha, Buru Nanak, and so on. Almost same is for Hindu Mandir (Temple) as they are usually associated with the god'd name they worship in that temple.
Sorry that was meant to be "Guru" and not Buru.
its a dedication, like st pauls church etc.
