Getting down to this one at last and need to confirm one last answer, about there have already been postings, none of which convince me!

18 ACROSS
It is exemplified in a letter of Lord Macaulay (8)

The most likely words are ACCENTED or ASCENDER.

Perhaps someone has had more thoughts on this.

I put ascender - the L in Macaulay is an ascender

The fact that Macaulay is a writer being a red herring... I think !

Even though the L is actually upper case.. Perhaps the lower case 'd' is the candidate. If it's not ASCENDER.. I don't want to have to wade through all of Macaulay's letters!
The L is Macaulay is not upper case... and ascender WAS the right answer !
