I don't quite know which category to post this question, but here goes...

Does anyone else own up to being rubbish at arguing, is it a 'skill' that can be learned??? Or are some people just no good at it???

The reason I ask is that I try to avoid arguing with people simply coz I always get beat. I try to make a point and the other person counters with a really good reply leaving me floundering!!! I listen to arguments at work (or read 'arguments in question replies here' and find myself saying, 'Good point, let's see the reply to that one!' after almost every repost!!!

I can't even beat my daughters in an argument!

I've also worked with people who seem to have figured out Every possible scenario to an argument and who could come up with a reason to mount a case for anything... They really can have you believing black is black!!!

Is it just thinking on your feet or what???

I sympathise gazzawazza, I can never win an argument either. I usually sit back and allow everyone else to get on with it as well, sometimes it's safer that way. I think there is an art to it, I haven't perfected but I think the best way of dealing with it is to pick and choose, there's always something or some topic you're good at and can provide irrefutable evidence to back yourself up. Sometimes it best to sit back and decide if something is an 'argument' or a 'debate'. If it's a debate, sometimes something can be learned so it's best to let everyone get on with it but if it's an argument, don't start it and wait until the fires gone out of it before saying anything, you may not win but there can be satisfaction in not being flayed alive.
PS, if your daughters are teenagers, you can't win anyway so don't feel bad.
