Could somebody please explain the following for me. Last week's Sunday Mirror bonus crossword had the following and apparently conflicting clues from the answers printed today.

5d = Final terms (9),  17a = Country house (5).

The grid configuration was that letter 8 of 5d intersected with letter 1 of 17a.

The answers printed today were Ultimatum & Villa.

Is there some alternate spelling for 5d which escaped me?

don't they put the answers i the gird?
v odd.
only goes to show that the mirror is bad for the brain!
All I can think of is that whoever compiled the xword did so by handwriting, put in ultimatum, and when they came to find an 'across' word read the u as a v and thought 'villa fits'. Obviously no one checked it.

I know what you mean donslot, I didn't send mine in because I couldn't get anything to fit with the v. They should go back to school and learn how to spell!

They're not the only ones though, the Daily Star has done it a few times.

Good luck with this weeks.
