I thank everyone for their previous comments, I had already looked in the help folder on itunes but the way that was suggested, ie. transferring into a library, did not seem to work. I have an even bigger problem now, I downloaded itunes 8 onto my old laptop, as it was on the new desktop that I want to put my itunes folder into. Now when I go into my itunes on the laptop to try and get the library transferred, I am getting the message:
the file "iTunes Library itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version. Anyone any ideas as to how I can rectify the situation, or am I going to have to start again on the new desktop. Thanks

You may refer to this step by step guide, it will teach you how to transfer iTunes library to another computer, it's easy to understand and works pretty well for me. It's safe and it will not delete your iTunes music and video.
