Hello

My girlfriend and I have been living in a flat we moved into mid july. Since we have been living there we have noticed mould growing everywhere! Up the walls, on the window sills. Its even ruined some of the furniture. We have contacted the agency who we are renting the property through, but they dont seem to want to know. Is there any way we can claim anything back for this type of problem? Its very damp inside the flat, and the couple across from us, apparently moved out because of the same problem. Not only is it horrible to live in, but surely its not very healthy to live with damp and mould all the time. If anybody has been in a similar situation or knows what the best thing to do is, please let me know.

Many Thanks

The problem with mould is that unless you kill the spores.. it will keep coming back.. you also have to treat the source of the problem.. Condensation??? Lack of ventilation?

I bought a spray from a company to be used on leather and fabrics and its worked PERFECTLY.. doesnt come back. (http://www.lttsolutions.net/em-clean.asp)

Have to say though.. I would be kicking up a right fuss with the agents and landlord!!! SOunds to me like your situation - there is something wrong withe the building.. try threatening to not pay your rent (dont actually do it!!)
Hi, if it's as bad as you say in just a few months then I would take some photos of it and go into the agents and show them. If he asks to keep the photos just say you have another copy in case you need them. That may worry him into doing something. I would say that if it's as bad as you say they must have known about it before you moved in. If you decide to get rid of it yourself, as Nosha says you have to kill the spores. The thing with mould is that when it's dry you don't notice it and that its when it is usually spreading as it spreads with any breeze that goes through a room. Then when the weather turns damp the stuff turns black and looks terrible. This can also make a room feel damp. If you have to do it yourself try Dettox Mould and Mildew remover. You can get this in any supermarket. Either spray it on or put it on a cloth and wipe it on and it should kill the stuff. You may need to use it more than once though and be very thorough with it.
Get the Council's Environmental Health Officer to come and inspect and they will write and tell your landlord what his obligations are
