how should I complain to a flight company about food that was given to customers that was out of date. This meal was paid for in addition to the cost of the flight. What should I include in the letter?

You should include the relevant details of the food detailing the meal and how out of date it was and how you knew. i.e. was there a sticker? The date of the flight and the airport. Did you point this out at the time? if so what was the response? if not why not?

Most importantly (people often don't do this) you should tell them what you want done about it. If you're looking for compensation or some sort of good will guesture you should tell them.

Remember the meal was probably supplied by a third party company not the airline so the airline will take this up with the meal supplier so keep the tone polite but firm

many thanks!

I used to work for a flight catering company and to send out of date food to an aircraft is a big big no no. Grounds for contract cancellation.  I must admit though that I have seen the dates changed and then sent out.

Hope you kept the evidence. I'm surprised the flight attendants accepted the food though. When the food is delivered to an aircraft, they are supposed to check the dates.

Also, find out the Chief Executive's name (by phoning the Company perhaps) and write to him marked "Private and Confidential" on the letter and on the envelope, which should mean that only his P.A. can open it; he or she is bound to pass it on to him or deal with it in his stead.  That way no-one below his station can cover up the matter.
