I'm researching the Birch family from Newcastle-under-Lyme and can find them in the 1881 and 1901 censuses but nothing comes up for any of them in 1891. I can't understand it - does anyone know if the 1891 N-u-L census was destroyed in some way?

ahhhh, that's because they will have the newly indexed versions I think, alot of the returns from all years have been recovered using scanning technology and this has added water or moisture damaged entries. I guess that is what it is anyway.
I've just noriced also that on the 1881, joseph is 40 and emma is 36, on the 91, joseph is 57 and emma 48!!!! that's a huge difference , Josephs place of birth on 81 is Foxt and on 91 is fort, but it will be Foxt which is a short distance from Ipstones wnere Emma and her mother were from. Which i think would make Joseph the son of Rupert and Edith Birch who was baptised at Ipstones in 1838. With brother Charles and sister Olive i think. rupert's father was Joseph too and so that may well be correct.
Emma was baptised 30th august 1847 daughter of michael and Alice Johnson nee Wooliscroft. There is a really confusing differences in the ages given in these returns.
actually Joseph who was the son of Rupert married an Ellen Bradley and so eliminate him!!!

You're a star, Craft. You can see why my head was hurting. As you point out, there's also differences in the ages of Joseph and Emma and then one of Paul's brothers, Alfred, married his widow, Rosanna, after he was killed in 1917.

Sorry, I logged off quickly to go out yesterday and failed to take in that you'd supplied the details on the 1891 census and that Paul was still at home.

I'm now going to list everybody and try and settle all these dates once and for all.

By the way, we know that James was also killed in a mining accident so we're still looking into that.

Many, many thanks.
You're very welcome Eric.......I enjoyed it.
are you going to send off for his birth certificate (or at least what I think is his)....I gave details on the previous page and this would confirm whether or not he was actually born in 1875......
Question Author
Yes, Craft, I'm now going to send for his birth cert and agree with 1875 as being the likeliest. The only snag with that is that I applied for another birth cert. in July and the GRO keep changing the 'expect by' date and it's now 9th November so I won't be holding my breath.
good grief Eric...............I've applied for and received about 10 certificates in the last 6 weeks.......I'd ask for my money back and re-order as the time delay is ridiculous.
Question Author
Hi, Craft. You made me think about the certificate I'd been waiting for for ages so I looked into my GRO order and I realised I hadn't paid for it!! No wonder I'm thickoeric.
Question Author
Sorry, Craft. Forgot to ask you for the ages of Joseph and James Henry Birch on the 1911 census, please then I'll stop pestering you!
