Please can someone advise me on how I should machine wash a black waistcoat with a white shirt attached to it - would it be washed with the WHITES or COLOUREDS

I would give it a very gentle wash and turn the water temp down as low as your machine will allow. I think manufacturers are more clued up these days about using dark and light colours together in clothing, so I doubt you will have any problems. I wouldn't wash it with the whites but you could include acrylic sweaters, underwear etc. in the wash that were coloured.
I would wash it buy hand in cold water and use washing up liqu, its mild, dip a small amount of the black part in first and see if it has a heavy black die. you will know if the water start to turn black. If it dose then dry clean it. It want cost too much. If washed then hang it on a coat hanger to dry DONT tumble dry. Hope this will help you.
Or you could just put a colour catcher sheet ( available from most supermarkets )in the machine which would absorb any dye that was in the water. What do the washing instructions say ?
