can You play dl\'d Blu-Ray rips on a new ps3 slim

Hi i was interested to know if you can play downloaded HD blu-ray film files on a new ps3. if so does it require any codecs or add ons to play them, which formats does the ps3 recognise for HD e.g avi, vls, mpeg for non HD dvd rip films. if you didnt figure it out i dont have a ps3 yet. Any help will be much apreciated. thank you.

The PS3 can play DIVX format movies and has no problem playing "copies" of dvds and blu ray films but thats not to say that they will not withdraw support for this at a later date.

I must say that I own both the PS3 and XBOX360 and find the xbox much more upto date with current codecs (DIVX ext) than PS3.
