I told her I thought it was Europe for political reasons, even though gepgraphically it is much closer to North America.

Apologies for raising an intellectual question so long after opening time.

Panic don't apologise....you lifted the standard of tonights questions significantly......
Geologically its part of the America's because its to the left of the great ocean rift that goes through the middle of the Atalantic. We are on the eastern side of that rift with Iceland one of the blobs that comes out of the sea because its volcanic rock that make out of the rift weld.

Sorry for the hack geology (if there are any geos present) but that about right in laymans terms.
