CORNEILLE seems to be the answer. What is the link between 17th C French dramatist and the city?

22 DOWN No relation of P G Wodehouse in Powys
R_S_E (5)
I've gone for ROSIE. Anyone give me a full explanation?

Thanks in advance to all you literary whizzes.

Thanks Jumbuck. I now recall that Pompey is a nickname for Portsmouth.
glad to help - and I have seen Rosie given before but can't remember the explanation (just tried searching to no avail).
Question Author
