Is this a good idea ?

http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/125122/Let-s-all-be-a-Muslim-for-the-day-says-Mayor-Boris

A couple of quotes from the mayor -

“That’s why I urge people, particularly during Ramadan, to find out more about Islam, increase your understanding and learning, even fast for a day with your Muslim neighbour and break your fast at the local mosque. I would be very surprised if you didn’t find that you share more in common than you thought.”

“There are valuable lessons that people of all backgrounds can learn from Islam such as the importance of community spirit, family ties, compassion and helping those less fortunate, all of which lie at the heart of the teachings of Ramadan.”

Now - I realise that the closest some of us may have come to meeting a Muslim , is when you walk by the television . However will be doing as Boris suggests?

OK well I'm getting R1Bird to walk 3 paces behind for a month, does that count?
I hate to be a kill joy but at what point did he suggest anyone 'live like a Muslim'?

He seemed to be suggesting people simply gain a better understanding of Islamic culture. Surely you can't all be upset about the idea of learning things? Then again maybe none of you decided to read past the headline?

The fact of the matter is we live in a multi-cultural society, you can try to understand the people around you and enjoy the differences and similarities of cultures, or alternativley you can sit on your computer complaining about how the country's going to hell in a handbasket. Either way is fine by me.

Good point Verix - Exactly that is what he is saying. "try to undersdtand Islam" and anyone who wants to increase his knowledge (as many claim here) it is not a bad idea. Perhaps once people have done that then many would not be saying what they are saying right now.
islam is well understood, that doesn't mean that Islamic practises are any less bizaar.
Don't Forget that Boris is the Grandson of a Muslim and, perhaps a Close Muslim himself.
Verix, on the face of it, yes, I can see where the prize twit is coming from, but on the same theme, why hasn't he said anything about understanding anyone elses belief?.

He's just cosying up, nothing more.
Keyplus - “Perhaps once people have done that [try to understand Islam] then many would not be saying what they are saying right now”

I disagree.

Your recent admission that you yourself would be more than happy to see your 9 year old daughter married to a mature man may convince them otherwise.

I have had many debates with you Keyplus and pretty much all of them have been acrimonious.

Many people find your religion runs contrary with their morals and/or beliefs. Why?

Let's look at a few reasons...

1.Women being subservient to men.
2.Child brides.
3.Medieval punishment for minor crimes.
4.Animal cruelty (ie. Halal slaughter)
5.Women covering themselves from head to toe just so Muslim men aren't 'tempted' to rape them.
6.Multiple wives for men, but absolutely no multiple husbands for women.
7.Telling lies is acceptable (and commendable) to none Muslims.
8.Killing none Muslims is an acceptable thing to do if it's in the interest of Islam.

I could go on.

Islam, as a moral framework, stinks.

It is immoral from the ground up, being as it is, derived from Mohammed – quite possibly the most famously psychotic person ever to have lived.
I know we are moving aeay from the original question, (thats discussions for you), but on Question time, some time ago, a leading Muslim Cleric was on, and he said that Islam and Christianity cannot live together, and are at war, he also said that if a woman didn't do as she was told, then you hit her, its permissable.

And this on mainstream television.

My parents and a majority of the people who live in my city here in Michigan are Muslim.
I am not.

I chose to go separate ways because all these rules, punishments and being obligated to do duties to go to heaven....things don't make sense (just like all these extra comment questions you are asking) I've asked all those questions

The only real down to earth explanation for everything is "JUST BELIEVE."

If you hurt people, smoke, do bad things....you can still repent.
??

A lot of my peers (not my friends, they are around my age though) they smoke, drink, go out and do bad things, say bad cuss words, wear hijabs...but on Ramadan they think that year's worth of sin will be washed away if they just fast 30 days straight.

So it's okay to be bad till then? Whenever I question them, they give me an essay's worth of an explanation about hell being eternity if you don't repent.

I've read all the books, pamphlets, been to mosques and met with Imams. I don't know, I have the same questions you do and when somebody answers, it's not clear enough or it arouses another question, whose answer is not clear enough.

Hi smudge,
Thats probably the best answer on this post.

Excellent.
oh is smoking 'doing bad things' ?
No chance
Ive rarely heard anything as stupid as the title of this discussion
Good for you Smudge.

You're doing an increasing rare thing - thinking for yourself.

Using reason, logic and rational thought, you'll see reality and life for what it truly is.
Good morning & thanks Lonnie.

Good morning birdie - not sure of you realised it, but I didn't write that (Best Answer chosen by Asker post). I found it on another forum. It's from someone who's family are Muslim, but has expressed his/her own thoughts on their way of life - quite sensibly & rightly so.

Have a good day all.
*if you realised it - not of!
