Tonight I watched the quiz show "one versus 100". This was one of the questions - Which day of the week was named after the Anglo-Saxon god of war? The two remaining competitors both got the answer wrong. They chose Thursday from Thor who is the god of thunder and who I thought was a god of war too because of what I remembered from my school days. The right answer was Tuesday from Tyr who is definitely a god of war. I think the main competitor lost about 8,000 because of that question. It seems like a trick question. Can both Tyr and Thor be the Nordic god of war?

I think it's correct that Tyr is the god of war, and not Thor.

The Scandinavians called him Tyr and the Anglo-Saxons Tiw.

Thanks Sarumite. I don't know why I didn't learn about Tyr in my school days; only about why the other days of the week were so named. The first I knew of Tyr being a god of war was when I bought Black Sabbath's Tyr and I did some reading to find out who Tyr was. Even then I didn't relate him to the day of the week Tuesday.
