I need to register with inland revenue as self employed as I will be starting a freelance role although I still would like to carry on with my part time job. What do I need to do? I'm finding this very confusing! Am allowed to be employed by a company whilst being self employed?

Thanks :)

Yes you can be both at once. Your employer does not need to be told but they may not like it.

You just need to contact the HMRC to get yourself onto their records as a self employed person.
You can be employed and self employed at the same time It has nothing to do with your employer what you do. Either complete a cwf1 form or phone 0845 915 4515 tell them that you are also employed and they will send out the relevant pages on your tax return in April when you put down your different sources of income.
You will find that if you ring your tax office and explain your circumstances they will be extremely helpful as they prefer to set people on the right road from the start than to have problems to sort out after the event.
Agree with all the above, however worth checking (in a low key way) that your employer has not included something in your T&Cs of employment with them that requires you to inform them (and get their prior agreement) if you have other paid employment. Some employers do this - it may depend on the role you have.
