Preserving an autograph on a pair of football boots

Sorry if some people think this is not the right section for this question, but I couldn't see a more appropriate one.

I have a pair of black, leather football boots that have been signed in an oil-based ink by the footballer that gave them to me.

I want to preserve the signature and my thinking is to use some kind of clear spray lacquer. I was going to buy a can of clear acrylic lacquer via eBay, but one seller on there has told me that they cannot guarantee that this will not tarnish the boot and (as a result) ruin the signature.

Does anyone have any advice/suggestions please?

I wouldn't risk covering the signature with anything. Maybe keep the boots in a tight fitting box to avoid damp (mold) and sunlight (fading).

Cheers guys.

I was planning to display them on a stand, hence why I wanted to protect them.
