I have loaded cds onto my laptop and managed to get them onto my ipod I have also bought through itunes and all been very easily loaded onto ipod. My sister is buying my mum an ipod, really just for her to listen to audio books but I know it will be up to me to help my mum buy/load an updates she wants via my ipod. I notice there are all sorts of places online you can buy audio books, Waterstones for example but is this just as easy to do when not getting all from one 'store'. I am not sure what problems I expect to find but was just really hoping to know if it would be very straightforward.

The iTunes store has a big audiobook section. It's always best to buy from there, if possible.

However, I think the audiobooks on there still have DRM. (Usually, the ones without this (basically all of the regular music), has a plus icon next to the price.)

DRM is a very bad system, because it forces you to use iPods forever, as the audiobooks will not work on other systems.

I believe Amazon also sells many audiobooks. If they don't have DRM on them (I'm not sure), then go with them. It's a simple matter to drag the files into iTunes after purchase, and then sync to iPod as usual.

If both have DRM, and you accept those limitations, then go the iTunes store route, as it's simpler.
I've just checked Amazon.

They do offer DRM-free audiobooks (note that is says they work on regular mp3 players).

So, assuming iTunes books have DRM still. I'd definitely go the Amazon route.
