Can laser surgery be used for both long-sightedness and short-sightedness?

I believe so, but not everyone's eyes are suitable.

I know that my sight would not respond well to laser surgery, which is fine, I like wearing specs, but in most cases, modern surgery will correct defects.
There are many different types of refractive surgeries which cater for most prescriptions.
There is a limit to laser refractive surgeries for both long and short sighted corrections but there is an increased demand for lens replacement surgery, a technique commonly used for cataract surgery, which covers a wider range.
