Could someone explain the way an ip[hone works sim card wise please?
My son's mate has sold him his iphone which is now out of the minimum contract, my son has put his 02 pay as you go sim in the phone, after paying to have it unlocked.
He was fine with it Friday and Saturday but yesterday he went onto the itunes site (I think) and tried to download some tunes and the screen has frozen with a picture of a usb lead on it. he can still recieve calls, i just rang him, but he can't get off that screen. Though I havn't seen it myself to tell quite why that is.
It is perfectly genuine btw, the phone did definately belong to his mate on contract, it is not dodgy, and the phone was unlocked in a proper shop.
What is perhaps the problem? Are iphones not meant to be pay and go?

thanks in advance

Hi Dot :o)

Has he tried restarting the iPhone? by holding the menu and sleep button?
I found this which may help.

If he can manage to then get him to back up anything on his iPhone before he resets it.

Hiya Wingnut how are you? Thanks for the reply, He's still at work with it and only due home after 6. I'll ring him and tell him to try that, thanks.
Iphones will work with PAYG sims, but you won't be able to take advantage of a lot of the internet facilities on it, and if you do use any internet stuff at all on it remember that PAYG sims don't get free internet whereas an iPhone sim does (so it might get really expensive)

also depending on the version of the software on the phone some of the access point settings soometimes need to be changed to get the internet side of it working at all.

Anyhow, as it came up with a USB lead on the screen, has he tried plugging it into a computer with iTunes installed and seeing what it says?

No not yet Chuck, when he gets in I'll see what is what with it, he isn't very technical! Thanks
I get free internet on pay as you go Chuck.
To use the phone normally on pay-as-you-go, it should not be unlocked.

The so called 'jailbroken' phones do not work properly with the phones OS, and the regular software updates that offer new functionality to the phone will not work on a jailbroken phone.

There are many disadvantages with a jailbroken phone. The only advantage is you can buy apps that have not been approved for the phone. Many of these apps fail approval because they have poor security or are badly written software, or encourage illegal content.

It is possible to restore with iTunes.

cheers Gromit, I read that but didnl;t follow it, what does it all mean?
Question Author
ok i have the phone and loking at that link gromit, it is complicated, there is the white usb picture anf the itunes loko and the littel locked padlock, so it's going to be a right palava to get it sorted, but he has a mate who could do it with the help of your link he thinks, so ta for that
Sorry, Only just seen your posts.

Just plug the phone your computer and open iTunes. The Phone should appear under devices on the left. You can now restore the phone to factory settings/ungrade to new firmware.

This will probably wipe content off the phone. If your son can plug into into his mates computer, he should beable to get some of the content back.

Gromit just to let you know that I have now sorted the phione out by doing just what you said, plug the USB lead in and open itunes and it recognises the phone, updated the software, then restored the phone to factory settings but he had already got the back up done previously and so all his music was put back on, so thanks, worked really well and very simple
cheers
