sounds very much like the atkins to me, weight loss will be short lived when she finally returns to carbs
The South beach diet is brilliant. It has a two week strict phase at the beginning which is difficult but if you can get through that you'll be ok. It is much better and healthier than atkins. I really liked it and if you stick to it you should loose a lot of weight. Good luck.
I eat a limited amount of carbs from Mon - Fri but this is more because of my PCOS rather than a dietry thing, they're actually my favourite food group! I tend to eat meat/fish and salad/veg in the eveings or soup and a roll (which I love because bread and butter is a treat). Lunch this week is going to be crunchy veg and homous and breakfast tends to be fruit and pro-biotic yogurt. The weekends I'm a little more flexible as if you totally deprive yourself of the things you like then you'll end up craving them.

All of the above is in conjunction with a hell of a lot exercise. I'm in the gym at least four hours a week (although not every day) and I've just started salsa.

Not eating carbs can make you feel quite sleepy initially, make sure that you're eating enough of everything else as well or else you'll get fed up and your focus will go.
