An exquisite construction by Kea, with a very pretty ending. I found myself making some wild stabs based on the definitions and then working back to the misprinted wordplay before it all fell into place.

Going back a bit, I was interested to see that SALAD as well as BOWL had been allowed in 4042. I'll stop kicking myself over that one now!

This was another excellent offering from Kea, and another "how on earth did he construct this?" moment was experienced by this solver!

I think they should have insisted on the shading -- it may well have made John Green's task of checking a little easier.
Once again Google has mislead me. I searched the theme and two authentic looking sites gave the story where the miscreant hacked away areas of surface which caused the demise, but the object remained intact. Therefore I spent three days moving my cut out around the grid looking for the impossible. But that's what friends are for isn't it?
Regarding John Green's checking, I warrant that he will find more wrong entries through transcription errors than difficulty on this one. Only the meticulous will prevail:-)
Okay - I still can't figure it out, but I think part of the problem is I'm not confident I've got the structure completely right. Am I right in thinking that the structure doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the grid? The clues I don't understand seem to be pivotal in working this out - 42 down and 46 across. I also don't understand 16 across and 27 across, which I also believe will give some of the structure as well.

It seems to me that if the structure is said to be "standing up" at the start, it's going to be "lying down" at the end. But I'm blessed if I can see where to put it. I'm pulling my hair out - please help!
alice50 - everything you say is correct, which only really leaves you with one variable to be "stumped" on (as per earlier posts). When you're looking for those new words though, it would be worth having a list of reasonably obscure names to hand!
Finally finished it - the cause of all my woes was I had forgotten to highlight one of the misprints in the grid, which just threw everything off. Arrgh. A very fine puzzle, and I agree about feeling the need to highlight!
PDM just arrived - but what suddenly clicked was my own utter stupidity. When moving the structure I had been so careful to get the various bits in the right place that I had left some blanks in places not even affected by the move - hence not being able to see a possibility with only one empty cell. ***WARNING *** be VERY careful when you transcribe this on to your entry :(
Due to Holidays I started this late but now I've just completed it, it has got to be one of the best of the year so far.

Hard but fair clues, I particularly liked 42d which was my last solve, with a brilliant PDM and final grid construction.

Many thanks Kea.

Time for a rest... then on with this week's puzzle.

Have nearly finished 4046, which is a loteasier than 4045.
Have got everything sorted for Admission, but for 44a.
It does not seem to be a word.
Any gentle nudges please,
Thanks
Fancydan - The NW county is an abbreviation of the most obvious one and is wordplay. The vowel and penultimate letters need to change for the definition, and the word is affected by the endgame.
Hope this helps
thanks clamzy.
kicking myself hard
best wishes
