I believe swimming is very good for you as it exercises every muscle in the body?
my dad has painful knees through old age really so might not be the same but he was advised to go swimming but it was important he does the crawl rather than breast stroke. Could you use something like the crosstrainer - whilst you are bending your knees there is not the same pounding on the knees? Would you be ok brisk walking?

Try rowing cycling or swimming. it's the impact that's done the damage and not the actual pressure.
