I love this answerbank

At the age of 74, I have just started to participate with answerbank. One thing I would like to say, I wished there was a spell check, as I lost a lot of schooling during the second world war, because my mother was hard of hearing, I had to stop at home in the mornings to tell her when the air raid warnings started, when we had to run to our garden shelter. I now look forward to reading what people write about, and the avenues that it goes down, some of the answers completely go away from the original question. Sorry to go on about my war years. Hope that it never happens again.

More war years. When in the infants school, we would have the local bobby come into the class room, with a large rolled up poster, which he would hang over the black board. They were bright coloured pictures of insects, butterflys etc. which we were tolded never to touch if we find one as they were small bombs, that would blow your hand off. They were dropped by the German aircraft, sticky bombs we called them. Our house was on the German flight path to London, and many a time you would see dog fights in the sky, with planes being shot down. I can well remember my dad going bananas, because they fix a large tin box to our front fence for the war effort, which people had to put their wast food in for the pigs, but my dad reconded it would attract rats. Another time all the street had to put all metal items out in heaps in the road, saucepans, etc, and a lorry with workers collected them all up, All metal items like railing, gates etc were cut down and taken away as well, there was not any metal items about after this. I uderstand that there was not a lot any one could do, because it was for the war. One last point I will tell you for now, when walking home from infant school one day, a barrage balloon had been cut loose, the cable of it was being dragged all over the roof of houses and down the roads, where us kids running like mad tried the put our foot on it, looking back on it, that was b--- dangerous. but one of our aircraft shot it down, you could hear the guns going, I do not remenber any one telling us to take cover. Barrage bulloon material made strong shopping bags. Now no more, it's taking me to long to look words up, and I only have a small dictionary

Can I add my welcome to everybody else's. As a septer... septur.... septor,,, er, seventy-odd year old myself, I too find the cut and thrust of this site fascinating, and there is a mine of information to be found in the various subheadings - mind you, nobody has been able to find me any 103 brandy so far! I think there ought to be a special section of Chatterbank for mature posters - what do you think?

Zacsmaster - many thanks for the link - have you bought any off this site? When I press the "Buy" button I get "Page not found" which leads me to think they probably don't do it any more either (I use to get mine from Oddbins, but they've stopped stocking it). I have e-mailed the site but no response as yet. Sorry to hi-jack your thread Crankshaft, but this is a matter of SOME IMPORTANCE (hic)!!!
