Someone gave me a couple of albums by an apparently established folk singer called Cara Dillon, and within minutes I was in a deep depression. Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen are nothing on this slash-your-wrists merchant. Has anyone ever listened to anything worse?

I think Cara is like Leonard Cohen - melanccholy rather than depressing - it is all a matter of how you interperet all you are hearing.

I don't think music should always be soft and fluffy - imagine a world full of Saturdays et al - how vavuous - but, like everything esle, perfect for a time, place and mood.

That's what music is about - fitting the mood.

No interpretation necessary. One can only hope she never plays Bridgend or Beach Head. The only good use for her CDs would be as coasters, for placing the glass of water with which to knock back the valium required after listening to her gawd-awful wail.
Josh Grobans 'February Song' is possibly the most morose song ever, along with anything by Anthony and the Johnsons.
