Jayne as a priestess of the COTLDG, I feel a responsibility to you about all this moon hoax business. You see I really don't want to move you into my numpty list as I have enjoyed our discussions etc. I just find it disturbing that you buy into this view. Have you read the the sites that debunk the hoax theory? do you simply not believe them. Do you not believe the presence of the laser reflectors etc http://www.braeunig.us/space/hoax.htm http://www.clavius.org/

Vic:

Yes I am 100% certain they went, I have no doubts, it would be easier to go than to fake it.

yes I believe in aliens, mathmatically they are certain, however equally certain is that the distances involved are so vast that we will never be able to meet or communicate unless we learn to travel al la Star Trek!
A major reason we haven't returned to the moon is it's heinously expensive.

Vic why haven't we returned? that's a poser. I suppose for the answer to that we need to look at why they went in the first place. Essentially the reasons were political, cold war rivalry and all that so really there is no obvious reason to go there other than for the sake of it . Of course now we have all the technological advances that where made as some sort of reward but from the outset there seemed very little obvious benefit. That is pretty much true today so I struggle to find a reason to go.
A fasinating book to read "Moondust by Andrew Smith"
it gives an insight about what the Apollo programme was all about and how it changed the lives of the men who took part.
We have not returned to the moon because it was largely a publicity stunt. There was very little science done, and what science was done could have been done remotely by robots.

The US and USSR were in an arms race, and this was just one match which the US won. It brought prestige and glory, but little of benefit to anyone.

Necessity being the mother of invention meant that there where a lot of forced technological advances that we benefit from today. However I agree Gromit that mainly it was a na na nana na to the ruskies!
