I have just read that the police have denied warning a married Muslim woman that her life is at risk (as stated in the report linked to by geezer).

So was this a so called 'honour attack' or not?
The attempted murder of this man almost defies belief. It's one of the most horrific things I have read about recently.

However, the argument that this attempted murder falls into the 'honour' category and therefore is cultural rather than religious is spurious to say the least.

The roots are in religion as all such 'honour' attacks/murders.

Why?

Because when a religion dictates that adultery (or even disobedience to one's parents/elders) is punishable (by death or other means), then adherents to that said religion are duty-bound to follow their religious teachings and meter out violence. Most religious people do not follow this code of course (thank God) but some do.

To disassociate this type of violence from religion is to misunderstand the nature of religion. Religion seeps into every aspect of life and as such religious practices become 'cultural' given enough time.

This type of attack is inevitable when the people perpetrating it believe they have a moral, cultural and religious right to do so.
Had a quick look on t'internet and found these lovely quotes.

From the lovely Christian Bible....

Leviticus-20:10: And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

And from the equally delightful Quran...

Quran-24:2: The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornicationflog each of them with hundred stripes: Let no compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by God, if ye believe in God and the last day.

But of course, honour killings are entirely cultural and have nothing whatsoever to do with religion....
Who cares what these manic books preach - its cowardice!

How do we break this dead-lock between the generations in muslim societies?
If you can answer that tamborine, collect your Nobel Peace Prize ;-)
Another 20y should fix it - I hope, birdie.

Down my way, I see young asians of mixed religions canoodling behind the shops......I can imagine their plight and I really do feel for them.
My dear little birdie - What would you do if your wife makes someone else happy behind your back?

A simple answer would do.
I'd make an educated guess and say he wouldn't kill her.
Actually Keyplus, that's an interesting question you've asked Birdie, so I'll ask you. What would you do?
Keyplus What exactly are you suggesting, you horrible little man? Are you suggesting (as I believe that you are) that I would harm (or possibly, have someone else cause harm to) my partner if the whiff of adultery was in the air?

Your question says far about you than I could ever write. Well done for showing us your true colours!

But we're getting off the point...

My assertion is that these so called honour killings (or violence) have their roots in religion. What have you got to say about that?

A simple answer will do.
Keyplus And just so there's no confusion in your mind, I shall answer your question honestly.

Your original question was, What would you do if your wife makes someone else happy behind your back?

Please forgive me if I'm reading between the lines. The question is not a literal one is it? It's a metaphorical one unless I'm very much mistaken. You're using the word happy as a euphemism for sexual intercourse aren't you?

So rephrased, your question would be, What would you do if your wife has sex with someone else behind your back?

My honest answer would be that I'd cry. Then I'd probably cry some more. For quite some time. Then I would pull myself back together and move on.

But the one thing I would never ever do, is be violent towards my partner.

If you cannot understand this then it's time to re-evaluate what you believe.
Yeah - my little birdie now you have given the answer I knew you would give. You see sometimes ignoring little kids bring good things out of them.

Exactly in other words you will divorce her and that is what Islam says. Islam does not say kill her. In fact I think Islam is the only religion that gives woman a right to ask for the divorce. So you are learning but a bit slowly but thats OK keep the good work going.
