what's wrong with my goldfish?

My fantail goldfish is acting strange. There is a dark spot on his back fin close to his body that hasn't been there before. He's also acting manic, swimming and "gulping" franticly. I even saw him dive into his pebbles hard enough to kick a few up and be heard across the room. Am I being paranoid and weird or is something wrong with him?

I'd say you've probably lost him by now. I'm sorry for your loss.

if not, I suggest you look at other fish in the tank, and whether anything has been added to the tank recently. it may be worth a water change, but..................................
